How to Make a Seat Cushion
I looked up how to make a cushion on the web and came up with a bunch of directions on how to make pillows but nothing on how to make a seat cushion. These instructions are for making a seat cushion, not a pillow.
- Cut out top and bottom of cushion, measuring 1" than finished size.
- Measure perimeter of top or bottom and cut boxing to cushion. Cut 1" larger in width than finish size.
- If you have a sewing machine that will sew welt cord, measure 1 1/2" on the fabric, cut the length of boxing. Cut 2 lengths of the welt cord. If you don't have a machine that will sew welt cord, sew boxing directly onto top and bottom pieces.
- Sew welt cord onto the material.
- Sew welt cord around perimeter of top and bottom pieces leaving a 1/2" selvedge edge. Join.
- Sew boxing to top or bottom. Join fabric together.
- Take each corner of boxing and make a crease at the acorner. Snip a little material at the corner to mark.
- Take remaining top or bottom piece and fit to each corner, using a plier stapler to hold material together along selvedge edge.
- Start at corner of the front of the cushion and sew to boxing, easing fabric to fit marked to fit marked corners. Turn cushion cover over and go to front of cushion. Sew along side to the back. Repeat with other side of cushion and remember to leave the back open to stuff with foam.
- Cut foam 1/2" less than measured length and width of cushion.
- Cut dacron wrap top and bottom to fit cushion. Cut long strips of wrap to fit the boxing part of the cushion.
- Staple pieces together around perimeter of cushion.
- Stuff dacron-wrapped covered foam into cushion cover.
- Pin opening together and sew together using a curved needle and upholstery thread.
