Popular Cookie Recipes for The Holiday Table and Gift Giving

Some of my favorite food memories involve warm, crunchy peanut butter cookies with soft centers...gotta have those soft centers, that's just my own preference. I found that if you bake the cookies till just done or before, you'll get that soft center because the cookie isn't completely done but technically cooked. Does that mean I'm a cookie monster? Now, if you add a handful of chocolate chips and chopped nuts to a peanut butter cookie recipe, you can rule the world. Ok, well maybe not the entire world, just the worlds of those receiving the mouth-watering delicacies.

Mom would make the best Christmas cookies while I was growing up. Mother would create different colored butter cream icing and turn us kids loose with table knives and frostings, bits of crushed candies and other decorating confections. When the frosting dried the cookies could be stacked and placed in pretty boxes or wrapped in colorful gift wrap tissue to be given as gifts to the neighborhood and friends.

Another favorite recipe that I shared with my own children were paintbrush cookies. It is basically a christmas or sugar cookie recipe but with "paint" made from raw egg yolks colored with food coloring. The egg yolk paint gives a pretty stained-glass like sheen to the baked cookies but if you are uncomfortable with the raw egg quotient substitute corn starch, water and food coloring. It's not about the cookies anyway, it's about the togetherness and bonding between parent or caregiver and child ;-)
