Bermuda Shorts

Short trousers, pants, or Bermuda shorts are also known as walking shorts and dress shorts. The style called "Bermuda shorts" originated with the British Army for tropical and desert climate attire. In Australia short pants are referred to as "stubbies"

During the 19th and early 20th centuries in Europe and North America shorts were considered attire for young boys until puberty upon which time they would be given long trousers. Now, that's a pretty frugal way to avoid the expense of having to buy new pants every time Johnny hits a growth spurt.

These shorts images will make cute additions to holiday ornament collection. Combine these trouser images with my tees, shoes and hats to make a vacation theme for your Christmas tree. Print the images onto shrink art sheets, color then bake to shrink into fun jewelry pieces or hanging decorations. Trace onto foam sheets or fabric to create puffy or soft ornaments.

Many Different Styles of Shorts

There are many, many different styles and names given to shorts. This list is a synopsis of a few well-known styles:

  • Baggies: Loose-fitting knee lendth shorts, standard shorts worn by English football teams before World War II
  • Bermuda: Knee-length short trousers commonly worn in Bermuda. Appropriate business and cocktail party attire when worn with long socks, a blazer and tie.
  • Board shorts: Swimming trunks originally intended as beachwear for surfers. Also called "jams"
  • Boxers: Male underwear
Boyshorts: Like boxers but made for females
Bun huggers, Spandex cycling or bike shorts: Tight-fitting racing briefs, commonly made from spandex and/or nylon fabrics
Cargo shorts: khaki shorts that fall a little below the knee and equipt with 4 or more flapped cargo pockets stitched to the outside of the fabric.
Culottes: Resemble a skirt but are loose cut shorts which were popularized as practical horse and bicycle-riding garments by Suffragettes in the early 1900's.
Denim shorts, Cut-offs and Daisy Dukes (female attire): These are home-made, usually denim cut-offs generally made by cutting off the legs of old or worn jeans or trousers above the knee.
Lederhosen: Traditional German shorts made of leather
Short shorts: Very short pants popularized in post war 1950's when new fashion tastes deemed Bermuda shorts to be old-style or fuddy-duddy.
Short trousers: are fully tailored, lined shorts with zip fly and belt loops. Usually a school or club uniform for boys. Also have been referred to as known as knickerbockers or knickers
Skorts: A mixture of two words "skirt and shorts", the skirt is a pair of shorts with a flap in front to mimic a skirt
